Vel-Ispyria's Story:

THE NIGHT BEFORE
The night before the bonding, the cultivators light the chamber with the low fungal lamps and let the young ones speak. Most do not. Some weep. Some ask the three questions every child asks: are the cuts deep, do the spores hurt going in, will the fungus know if I am afraid.

The priests answer honestly. Yes. Yes. And yes.

What the priests do not say — what every child already knows — is that there is no other way. The cuts are not punishment. They are the door. The fungus does not enter clean skin.

Then they tell them about Vel-Ispyria. Not to lessen fear. We do not lessen fear. We give it somewhere to rest. A child who walks to the cultivator's table holding her name walks differently than a child who walks alone.
